چکیده

This paper extends previous large-eddy simulations of the convective boundary layer over a surface with a spatially varying sensible heat flux. The heat flux variations are sinusoidal and onedimensional. The wavelength is 1500 or 4500 m (corresponding to 1.3 and 3.8 times the boundarylayer depth. respectively) and the wind speed is 0. 1 or 2 m sI. In every case the heat flux variation drives a mean circulation. As expected. with zero wind there is ascent over the heat flux maxima. The strength of the circulation increases substantially with an increase in the wavelength of the perturbation. A light wind weakens the circulation drastically and moves it downwind. The circulation has a significant effect on the average concentration field from a simulated, elevated source. The heat flux variation modulates turbulence in the boundary layer. Turbulence is stronger (in several senses) above or downwind of the heat flux maxima than it is above or downwind of the heat flux minima. The effect remains significant even when the mean circulation is very weak. There are effects too on profiles of horizontal-average turbulence statistics. In most cases the effects would be undetectable in the atmosphere. We consider how the surface heat flux variations penetrate into the lower and middle boundary layer and propose that to a first approximation the process resembles passive scalar diffusion.

Large-eddy simulations of thermally forced circulations in the convective boundary layer. Part I: A small-scale circulation with zero wind

We have conducted large-eddy simulations (LES) of the atmospheric boundary layer with surface heat Rux variations on a spatial scale comparable to the boundary layer depth. We first ran a simulation with a horizontally homogeneous heat flux. In general the results are similar to those of previous large-eddy simulations. The model simulates a field of convective eddies having approximately the c...

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...

Numerical and Laboratory Study of Horizontally Evolving Convective Boundary Layer. Part II: Effects of Elevated Wind Shear and Surface Roughness

Modifications of turbulence regime in the sheared convective boundary layer (CBL) by a number of external nonbuoyant forcings are studied experimentally in a thermally stratified wind tunnel and numerically by means of large eddy simulation. This type of CBL is observed in the atmosphere when an originally neutral or stable air mass is advected over a heated underlying surface. Emphasis in the ...

Large eddy simulation of the bubbly ocean: New insights on subsurface bubble distribution and bubble-mediated gas transfer

[1] The evolution of bubbles in a turbulent oceanic boundary layer is simulated using a multi-size multi-gas bubble model coupled with a Large Eddy Simulation model. Bubbles injected by breaking waves are brought into the boundary layer by episodic bubble plumes, and they form near-surface streaks in the convergence zone of Langmuir circulations. The equilibrium bubble distribution decays expon...

Mechanisms of Marine Low Cloud Sensitivity to Idealized Climate Perturbations: A Single- LES Exploration Extending the CGILS Cases

Climate change sensitivities of subtropical cloud-topped marine boundary layers are analyzed using large-eddy simulation (LES) of three CGILS cases of well-mixed stratocumulus, cumulus under stratocumulus, and shallow cumulus cloud regimes, respectively. For each case, a steadily forced control simulation on a small horizontally doublyperiodic domain is run 10-20 days into quasi-steady state. T...
